Fans of the Higurashi universe can rejoice — the chilling manga Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Oni is finally back after a four-month break. The series resumed this week with a pivotal new chapter, bringing readers deeper into its dark, mysterious world.

Story Synopsis
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Oni explores a previously untold “missing link” in the beloved Higurashi: When They Cry story. Set in 1923 during Japan’s Taisho Era, the manga introduces a haunting tragedy in Hinamizawa that alters the lives of a young girl and her friends. The narrative also offers a rare focus on Oryō Sonozaki, the powerful and feared matriarch of one of Hinamizawa’s Three Great Families. With the tagline “The final demon awakens. A new Higurashi toward the truth,” the manga continues to expand the rich lore of the Higurashi universe.

Manga’s Return and Publication History
The manga officially resumed on Tuesday with Chapter 22, marking its comeback after the previous chapter debuted on January 28. Originally launched by creator Asahi in Monthly Action magazine in February 2022, the series transitioned to Futabasha’s Web Action platform in February 2024 following the magazine’s closure. Futabasha also released the third compiled volume in September 2024.

Broader Context in the Higurashi Franchise
In parallel developments, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei: Iro Tōtoshi-hen, another manga extension of the franchise by Kei Natsumi, wrapped up earlier this year. Billed as the “answer arc” to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei, this title ended with its fourth volume on February 12.

The Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei series as a whole launched in 2021, introducing multiple arcs such as Oni Okoshi-hen and Hoshi Watashi-hen. Both of these arcs concluded in 2022 and further enriched the timeline and mysteries of the Higurashi world.

Franchise Origins
The Higurashi franchise began in 2002 with the first visual novel chapter debuting at Comiket, created by Ryukishi07 and 07th Expansion. The story follows a series of gruesome murders linked to a rural village’s annual festival. Over the years, the franchise has evolved across multiple media, with Higurashi: When They Cry Hou releasing in 2014 as a tribute to the fan community.
