In a move that delighted fans of Japan’s most irreverent samurai, Hulu has officially added Gintama Seasons 2 and 3 to its streaming library — complete with a brand-new English dub.
The expansion marks a significant step toward making the entire Gintama anime series more accessible to Western audiences, years after its chaotic humor first hit Japanese airwaves.
Story Synopsis

The Gintama anime, based on Hideaki Sorachi’s long-running manga, is one of the most beloved and unpredictable comedy-action series in anime history.
Set in an alternate Edo period overrun by alien invaders called Amanto, the story follows Gintoki Sakata, a freelancing samurai whose laziness and love for sweets contrast sharply with his hidden swordsmanship. Alongside his oddball team — Shinpachi and Kagura — Gintoki takes on absurd jobs, alien overlords, and relentless parodies of other anime franchises.
The addition of Seasons 2 and 3 to Hulu now allows viewers to experience more of the show’s outrageous arcs — including some of its funniest parodies and most emotional storylines — all newly dubbed in English for the first time.

Character / Key Figure Summaries
- Gintoki Sakata (voiced by Tomokazu Sugita / Michael Daingerfield)
A lazy, sugar-addicted samurai who runs the Yorozuya (Odd Jobs) business. Despite his carefree nature, Gintoki is a master swordsman haunted by his past as a freedom fighter in the Joui War. His blend of sarcasm and sincerity defines Gintama’s humor and heart. - Kagura (voiced by Rie Kugimiya / Jocelyn Loewen)
A superhuman alien girl from the Yato Clan who joins Gintoki’s team. Her childlike innocence and monstrous strength make her both comic relief and emotional anchor. - Shinpachi Shimura (voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi / Cole Howard)
The straight man of the trio, constantly exasperated by his companions’ antics. Yet, he remains loyal — and perhaps the only truly “normal” person in Edo. - Hideaki Sorachi (Original Creator)
Known for his sharp wit and meta-commentary, Sorachi’s storytelling remains a balance of comedy, social satire, and unexpectedly deep character arcs. His series has sold over 55 million manga copies worldwide.

- The series often breaks the fourth wall, even parodying its own animation studio and sponsors.
- The franchise has spawned three anime films, including Gintama: The Final (2021), which concluded the story.
- Hulu previously hosted only Gintama Season 1 — until this 2025 update added over 100 more episodes dubbed in English.
