Created by Shūichi Shigeno, the mind behind Initial D, MF GHOST takes place in the 2020s, after Takumi Fujiwara’s racing era.
The story follows Kanata Rivington, a British-Japanese driver who returns to Japan to participate in the prestigious MFG races. Unlike most racers, he drives a traditional combustion engine car in a world shifting toward electric and sustainable vehicles. Kanata also carries a personal mission: to uncover the truth about his long-lost father.

With its roots in Initial D and a reputation for adrenaline-fueled storytelling, MF GHOST Season 3 promises to deliver more intense racing and emotional depth when it premieres in January 2026.

Following the high-octane narratives of Initial D and its successor, MF Ghost, the upcoming sequel, Subaru and Subaru, takes a new thematic and character-driven approach. While details remain scarce, creator Shuichi Shigeno has confirmed that the story will explore two individuals, both named Subaras, as they navigate the thrill of racing and delve into deeper personal themes.
The announcement was made in the 27th issue of Weekly Young Magazine and marks a fresh direction for Shigeno, who had to pause MF Ghost due to health issues. With his return, fans anticipate a new narrative arc that honors his iconic style while expanding on the emotional stakes.
Initial D (1995–2013) was a cultural milestone, defining the street racing genre in manga. Its sequel, MF Ghost, introduced new characters and self-driving tech in a near-future Japan. Both series blended car culture with personal rivalries, earning international acclaim.
Though not much is known, the dual-name title suggests a symbolic or narrative duality. Will it be a team? Sthing’s? Rivals? One thing’s certain—expect drifting, tight turns, and Shigeno’s curves. Shigeno’s return signals a return to high-speed introspection.
Takumi Fujiwara – Protagonist of Initial D, Takumi was an unassuming tofu delivery boy turned drift king of Mount Akina. His minimalist personality and raw skill behind the wheel made him a legend in the genre.
Kanata Livingston – Star of MF Ghost, Kanata is a Japanese-British racer trained by Takumi. Set in a future where autonomous cars dominate, Kanata fights to prove human skill still matters on the road.
Subaru launches on July 4, 2025, and promises a revolution in Shigeno’s racing universe. Fans of the series, buckle up—there’s a new story on the starting line.
